Web Design

I’ve kept myself busy lately working on learning CSS and PHP. What does this mean? It means I’m working on designing and customizing web pages. Specifically, I’m helping a friend roll out a new website for her business. If this works, I may have a career ahead of me. If it doesn’t, well, it’s been a great way to occupy my time. I get so engrossed in it, it’s like the whole world fades away. It’s pretty awesome, in fact. I love diving in headlong into a project.

I’ve selected a few books that have been helping me on my way so far, and thought I would list them here.

I bought all of these books through Amazon at a substantial savings from the brick-and-mortar shops. What all of these books have in common is that they’re not too basic for the smart and savvy web user, but they also don’t assume that you know everything, or don’t have any gaps. Some of the books I looked at before selecting these actually talked down to me, if they weren’t already distracting me with poor page lay-out.

In the next couple weeks I hope to be rolling out the new site that I’ve been working on. Stay tuned for that.

Please click through on these links: Cuisinart CSB-76BC SmartStick 200-Watt Immersion Hand Blender, Brushed Chrome and Chef’n Switchit Dual Ended Long Spatula.

Doing so will help me figure out, hopefully, what’s going on with my Amazon Associates. Also – feel free to buy them. The immersion blender is a best-seller, reasonably priced, and great for winter squash mashing and soup, and the spatula is a favorite of mine, also great for soups and sauces!

Privacy and Content

Lots going on in Q-land. First off, about changes with my web presence. quasilaur.net will continue to be my blog, and your main source for what I’m happy to share with the public. Conveniently, you can guarantee on my Twitter feeds being seen on the side bar, and you can request to follow me if you currently are on Twitter. For more social networking, I can be found on a small handful of social networking sites like LiveJournal and Facebook, but both of those are ideally limited to those I interact with professionally or socially, and contain more private aspects of my life than I’m willing to share with a broader audience. Think of it as a 21st century filter for how I choose to conduct myself in my non-electronic life. My interest is in more carefully managing my searchable content on the Internet. Privacy will NOT be managed for you, and I’m interested in taking back what control I can for the content I’m responsible for.

I have also secured quasilaur.com. Right now it redirects to quasilaur.net, as does the email address that will be featured on my MOO cards. The plan is that once I get my past art work photographed, and some new stuff created, I’m going to make a more promotional art/whatever site that is separate from my blog. This is a long term project, so don’t hold your breath. I can’t guarantee it’s going to be happening any time soon as that I have a whole bunch of my art at my mom’s house, and that’s so darn far away I have to figure out how to get it here first. Between the cost of shipping and/or air travel, this might take awhile.

Looks like Jon has fixed the problems with my site. Looks like there was a lot of junk hidden, and thanks to his expertise, he found it and cleared it up.

Helpful information on what happened is found here.

I finally set up my very own blog. Now I have to just tweak a few things (like the style) and get some content in here, and I’ll be in business. Well, not so much business as having something out here for people to gawk at.

A brief introduction: Late 20′s Master of Social Work with an interest in working with sexual minorities, living in the Pacific Northwest, trying to find a job. My interests are wide and varied. I love art (especially 20th century pop art and Byzantine, Medieval and Rennaissance religious paintings, among many other styles). I enjoy listening to music, from alt-country to goth/industrial. I listen to KEXP on a regular basis. As far as books, I tend to favor non-fiction these days. Other reading I do is on the web.

Oh, and I’m a Mac user. :)

Stay tuned for more to come!

EDIT: Big thank you to Rob who is hosting this blog and has helped me set it up. Also, credits to him for the photo-splash I appropriated. Thanks Rob!!
